I teach in a school that has 97% of its students on free and reduced price lunch. I have a sensational group of 25 third graders this year. We are from a low-income community, so most of our supplies come from out of my pocket. I am more than happy to give, but on a teacher's salary, there are some things that I just cannot afford.
We are a close-knit family, and we love each other; we love experiencing new things, and we love to learn!
We are a very diverse classroom when it comes to our needs. My goal is to find every students needs and meet those needs, and, to accomplish that, I need your help!
My Project
So many times, students are unable to focus or complete their work. It is usually due to them being uncomfortable or feeling the need to move. My goal is to provide alternate seating for all of my students so that they may sit, stand, kneel, or whatever else they need to do within the classroom. As you can see in my picture, I am currently using old pillows from my house as floor seating. I have purchased some stools, but I don't have enough for an entire table, so some students are still in chairs.
My goal is to provide enough alternate seating so that every child has the option to sit where and how they like in order to get the most out of their school day!
We need floor cushions and stools. Some of my students do better without a chair because they are distracted by leaning back in it and cannot focus. With alternate seating, they will be able to comfortably sit on the floor. My students who need a little more motion will be able to sit on backless stools so they can twist and turn. My students who cannot sit still will be able to use kneeling pads to be on their knees so that they can bounce up and down. Finally, my students who are more comfortable in a regular chair will be able to stay in one.
So many times, students get in trouble because they cannot stay focused during class and work time. I want to try and eliminate that by giving students different seating options so that those who need to get their wiggles out can, while those who prefer to stay stationary can as well. By giving my students cushions and stools, you are providing movement within my classroom and helping students stay focused, too!
