I teach in a small, low income, suburban school district as a secondary Life Skill/Learning Support teacher. The students I started teaching from a very young age have grown up and now we have all moved to the middle/high school!
My classroom is made up of students with either an intellectual disability or a learning disability.
They have worked so hard over the years to grow not only academically (by mastering several of their individualized goals), but also in maturity and confidence. My students are so special that I believe they deserve a welcoming and inspiring classroom just as wonderful as they are, and access to all the resources they need in order to be successful!
My Project
Have you ever said or heard a teacher say something along the lines of "He is so smart. He would do so much better if he could just focus and sit still."? Well, I understand that thought all too well. Many of the students who come into my classroom, struggle with underlying disorders such as ADHD. I would like to give my students the option of standing while completing their work, and have a way to move their body safely if needed. I want to give them a way to better concentrate on their classwork.
My students need these desks because many students with ADHD struggle daily to focus their attention in class, which can cause their progress and grades to suffer.
I am hoping that by obtaining 3 of these standing desks, I can prove these resources to be desired, useful, and successful in giving my students what they need to learn. I want to use these desks as a means to convince my department to purchase more in the future.
