Stand Back and Keep Calm! We're Going to Try Science...
My students need a first aid kit, goggles, and an emergency eye wash station for an 8th grade science class.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Science can be compelling and interesting if you actively participate in the curriculum. Experiments, chemical reactions, physical inquiry stokes the imagination of the student. My 8th grade students need to have the ability to conduct these experiments safely.
I teach in a Title 1 school in a Latino neighborhood in South Tucson.
In our school 98% of the students qualify for free lunch. Gang activity and illegal activities are common in the area. Our school is like an educational refuge for the kids desperately seeking to better themselves. The dedicated staff, students and their families have started to change the culture of failure and acceptance of low performance. We have successfully raised our school grade from an F to a C this last school year. It seems that there has been a fundamental shift in the students attitude regarding academics and having felt some success, they now are openly saying that they can achieve more.
My Project
I have taken over a 8th grade science class that is woefully deficient in the most basic items and supplies that other schools might take for granted. The curriculum requirements for 8th grade involve physics and chemistry. We will be exploring chemical reactions and moving objects this year. Unfortunately, I do not have the most basic and fundamental safety needs to conduct the hands on experiments I have have planned. As you can see I am just asking for first aid items since safety will be a priority in my classes. Fortunately, our principal has managed to get some lab equipment donated to us by the University of Arizona. We still could use much more but all the lab equipment and supplies will be for naught if I don't have goggles, gloves, aprons, and adequate first aid needs. This modest request for safety supplies will give me the ability to conduct hands on lessons that the students will remember forever.
If we our going to regain our global position as a country of innovation we must make a commitment to the students.
Sadly, I teach in Arizona which currently ranks 46th out of 50 states in funding for its students. This request allows the students to become hands on scientists and the experiments will pique their interest in the world of science.
