My school supports a diverse group of students growing up in a high-poverty capital city. My students attend a Title I school and all of the students in my school receive free lunch. Many students come to class with limited ability to speak English and communicate with others. Several of my students have ADHD, special education and social-emotional needs, fundamental life needs, as well as language needs.
Many of my students have experienced things that are hard to imagine or understand; from living in refugee camps, leaving a parent behind as you travel to a foreign country, experiencing the loss of a loved one, my students face many challenges.
They live in extreme poverty, have been, or are homeless. Living in the inner city, drugs and gangs are a problem. Some are expected to care for their siblings at ages as young as 9 or 10. Most come from other countries where they don't have the same access to quality education. All are in need of support.
My Project
My students are inspired to become better focused. The requested Stand Up Desks with fidget bar will help my students better concentrate. They will receive the movement they are longing for, while providing the added reward of better health. They would love to be able to add more movement to their day.
Standing burns more calories and expends more energy than sitting.
Every year I receive students that come with a memo from a previous teacher that mentions that this student should be allowed to stand. My students stand up, lean on their desks, and then work on what is in front of them. My kids feel if they are able to stand, they will be more able to learn.
