What if someone had given us a chance to stretch our financial responsibility muscles before we got that first credit card in college? Values and habits that we develop as children follow us through our lives. We can have a monumental impact on the value students place on being financially literate.
Our student population is extremely diverse.
Over 40 languages and dialects are spoken in the homes of our students. Many are the first generation in their families born in the United States. They are excited to learn and ripe for new adventures in learning. I teach the future investors of our world economy. They are inquisitive, innovative, and crave complexity on a constant basis. They want to know why the world works the way it does and how to change it. They need to exercise their critical thinking skills and encounter authentic challenges. Sadly, most of these students have had little experience with financial literacy, yet they are curious and eager to have real-world experiences involving economics. They yearn to encounter an academic structure that satisfies their appetite for depth and breadth in learning.
My Project
We are a proud yet older school. Our floors are tile, and we have limited alternative seating resources. Creating a comfortable space where children can share, collaborate, and explore great books and hold meaningful exchanges would make reading time at school a magical event they will always remember. We desperately need a place where we can plan and solve problems during math time. Having a collaborative table where students can stand or sit together would be a game-changer.
A cheer goes up whenever I announce that it is team project time.
Having a space where students can collaborate and discuss diverse literature would be a dream come true for my students. This table would allow us to conference, share, and create responses to what we are reading. In addition, the height will allow students who need to stand to think most effectively, a nudge in the right direction. This shared space with access to charge laptops, will allow my kinesthetic learners to find success though movement. I would love to give my students some choice in where they sit and work. Having a collaborative work space would give my students the power to choose an environment that is inviting and engaging and prepare them for these type of interactions in the world beyond the classroom. . Providing an arena for them to sit and problem solve with teammates will allow small groups of children to have higher-level interactions as they discuss, debate, and dissect their learning while respecting others' viewpoints. These types of experiences will nurture tolerance in our classroom and make them successful 21st century learners. Incredible peer interactions are key to unlocking all other successes in life.
