My Students

My students are amazingly talented, curious and resilient. Their passion for life is inspiring. Though our school and community have limited resources, the students are driven to succeed.

Our school community is hugely underprivileged.

The students come from difficult backgrounds including incarceration, homelessness, and extreme poverty. With 80+% on free and reduced-price lunch, students struggle to get their basic needs met. It is not unusual for students to only have meals at school or arrive with no school supplies. Many students carry huge responsibilities when it comes to taking care of siblings or financially supporting their families.

The most diverse high school in Washington (1% Caucasian), students come from a wide variety of cultures, languages, religions, and ethnicity. In this environment, students learn to be open-minded and embrace those different from them. Community, relationships, and support are of top importance.

My Project

In our International Baccalaureate Film class, students must work in small film groups. Unfortunately, we do not have enough tripods for each group. Students find themselves racing against each other to check out the only two available. This isn't right. Smart, they know working without a tripod is detrimental to their final product. Film students learn early that a shaky camera greatly limits what they will be able to create.

Artists with great potential, these students deserve a chance to have the equipment needed to create the films they desire.

They want more than anything to be taken seriously. Please consider helping to make that a reality.
