Our class is full of eager little learners from various backgrounds. Our school is Title I and offers completely free breakfast and lunch for all students. There is a large number of students in our school who rely on the backpack program for food. There is a high mobility rate in our area due to migrant work and homelessness. Our community is in a rural part of the county, which limits our families' access to resources.
Our students are a creative bunch who want to experiment, create, and learn as much as they can.
They love challenges and exceeding expectations. They set goals for themselves in all areas of learning. Growth mindset is a big part of our class academically and socially.
My Project
The Surf Portable Lap Desks will provide a stable work surface while sitting on the floor. Having books held off the ground will keep kids from having to bend over and cause less back pain. They can be used while reading a book or working out of a workbook. They are lightweight and can easily be moved by kids around the room. They stack nicely for storage. Being able to get comfortable while working improves kids focus, stamina, and willingness to complete the desired task. We have been blessed with 4 of these desks and would like 4 more to double the impact.
Flexible seating allows students to have some control over their learning environment.
When I began implementing flexible seating options, I noticed my students were more focused when given the option of where to work. They were able to focus longer and completed more tasks. We had very few behavior issues during the year, which was noticeably different than in past years. I would like to add more options to our classroom to meet the ever changing needs of the students.
