Our school is a Title 1 school located in a rural low-socioeconomic area in Franklin County, North Carolina where majority of our students receive free/reduced lunch.
When you tell students to stop moving, stop tapping, or sit down they change their focus from engaging with their work and others to attempting to control their energy.
Do you like to tap your foot, click the top of a pen, tap your pencil? My students do! I often find myself engaging with a group of students and look up to see another group has moved to the floor or created their own learning space using storage boxes and pillows, or rocking their chairs back and forth.
Moving is natural, even as adults we find it challenging to sit still for periods of time, I want to provide my students with the opportunity to maximize their learning in a way that is most comfortable for them!
My Project
Stability balls and wobble cushions have started to take over classrooms all over the county and the benefits are phenomenal; in 21st century classrooms where learning is rigorous students attentiveness, posture, and engagement increases with these alternative seats. The movement helps students brains to be stimulated therefore increasing instructional time!
Stability balls and wobble cushions provide students the opportunity to control and channel their energy while being productive citizens in the classroom.
