This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our classroom consists of a diverse group of learners. Most of my students come from low income families without a lot of resources and opportunities. Although they are not always intrinsically motivated, they do love competition. Competing against me, their peers, or themselves gets them excited about what they are learning,.
They have been learning that our mindset is what is most important to our success by transforming a fixed mindset into a motivation mindset.
My students are changing their ideas from "I can't solve multi-step word problems," to "I can't solve multi-step word problems YET!"
My Project
Third grade is the first year students, in the state of Texas, take the STAAR test. In order to prepare them for this day, they need lots and lots of practice. Higher order thinking and multi-problems can be a big challenge.
STAAR Olympics will turn prepping for a state assessment into a fun competition by keeping them focused, engaged, and excited.
We will begin with opening ceremonies to kick off the competition. Each week during class, students will work in groups (countries) to answer test-like questions, Teams will earn earn chances to shoot baskets, put golf balls, shoot hockey pucks, etc. based on the number of questions they answered correctly. On Friday, teams will compete in the Olympic activities (sports) to earn points for their country. Teams will calculate their scores weekly and medals will be given to the top teams.
