Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I school where 95 percent of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Seventy-one percent of our students go home to non-English speaking families. Some of our students are the only English speaking people in their families.
I make it my goal every year to supply my students with the materials they need and hands-on experiences that they wouldn't get elsewhere.
I love it when my students finish an activity and say what a great time they had and how much they learned! Our students are very bright and deserve every opportunity they get!
My Project
Every year the state of Florida releases fifteen books that have earned the SSYRA awards. There is a set of books for Kindergarten to third grade that are picture books and easier chapter books, a set of chapter books for third through fifth grade, and another set of chapter books for sixth through eighth grade.
My third graders love the SSYRA Junior books!
(the picture and easier chapter books) We have a school wide competition for students to read the books and pass tests on the books.
I love to have the books available in my classroom where students can read them anytime they want.
By reading the SSYRA books students are exposed to different types of books than they would normally read. It also helps them improve their reading comprehension and fluency skills.
