Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing! They are a diverse group who come to school each day wanting to experience new things and grow. My students quickly learn that we can make excuses or we can make it happen. What makes my students so thoroughly fabulous is how consistently they choose to make it happen despite the obvious challenges they may face.
My school is a Title I school in Tampa, Florida with a wide range of diversity and high poverty.
Still, these students always impress visitors, and their very own teacher, with their tenacity and desire to grow and learn more no matter their educational background. There will always be issues in Title I schools and we will always work to overcome the obstacles. DonorsChoose.org is a great way for us to receive the help we need in order to make learning fun for our students.
My Project
If you aren't familiar with the Sunshine State Young Readers program hosted through FAME, then you are missing out. FAME puts together a list of 15 books which cover multiple genres while also being sure to be mindful of representation. This list has been well thought out and it shows, because students can manage to find at least one book on this list that they can enjoy.
Each year the SSYRA list features multiple titles that helps my non-readers become readers, which makes this list of books priceless.
To hear a child who claimed to hate reading come in and tell you that the loved a book are words that make a teacher's heart swell. This list encompasses all reading levels from grades 3 - 5, multiple genres, and represents multiple cultures. While school media specialists have these titles on hand, my students usually get so excited that they can't get their hands on them fast enough, so I try to have them available in our classroom library as well.
