My Students

My students are part of the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program. The GATE program strives to provide opportunities and enriched experiences beyond the traditional classroom setting.

In the GATE program, students are provided opportunities for learning the skills related to higher-order thinking; experience an understanding of the world’s people and their relationships to each other; and provide an independent quest of knowledge in areas of interest.

GATE classes emphasize student-initiated learning and offer academic challenges through enriched content, long-term projects, and interaction with intellectual peers. The GATE curriculum includes humanities, literature, science, math, visual arts, critical thinking skills, technology, and research.

My Project

The squid dissection activity will be part of a unit of study about marine life. While dissecting the squid, students will be able to compare and contrast structures and functions of the squid's anatomy to other marine animals we have been studying.

They will have hands-on experience working with tools and following specific directions.

We will also be able to discuss specific behaviors of squid and other marine life and how that applies to their body structures.

Students will work in pairs, building teamwork and social skills. They will also build self-confidence in experiencing their first dissection. Many of my students are interested in becoming marine biologists, and this activity will help them understand that field.
