My students need accurate tools to carry out science investigations. We are requesting thermometers and measuring and scaling equipment for extended explorations.

it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are eagerly exploring weather and I cringe when we come to the part about Earth's uneven heating and cooling. We can never find enough thermometers and those we have do not calibrate. (They came with the kit.) Frustrating! How can you measure change with inaccurate instruments?
Our school hosts an impressive science fair each year featuring projects from the entire student body.
Having authentic experiences in calculating accurately throughout the year as they observe, measure, and record change will make a huge difference in the quality of my students understanding and their scientific displays that will be seen by parents and the community. My students love science. I want them to have a solid understanding of scientific concepts before they move on to middle school. These materials will make their study more authentic, meaningful, and comprehensible. These outstanding and eager young learners deserve sharp tools to develop understanding through exploration.
My Project
My students will use these materials to explore weather and climate. This topic is more and more critical as time passes. We will also explore the solar system, magnetism, gravitational force, mass, and electricity. Students eagerly explore many topics, but weather is particularly important at this stage in their development. Our earth science unit is likely the first introduction to weather concepts for my students. We conduct investigations in which the students measure the uneven heating and cooling of water and earth. Students observe various causes that effect evaporation rates. We study the effects this has on the atmosphere. We introduce convection currents. I am particularly fond of introducing these concepts as they were not effectively taught when I was a young learner. Having accurate tools will make a world of difference in these students' understanding of weather and climate, and of science in general.
These materials will make my students' scientific exploration more authentic by increasing the accuracy of their results.
It is very frustrating to try to establish a scientific foundation for fifth graders with faulty instruments. No true scientific discovery is possible without the ability to trust the data. They are building the foundation of their scientific knowledge and cannot be truly successful without the right tools.
