Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Research is increasingly identifying that Americans are not reading. The only way to combat this frightening trend toward "aliteracy" is to connect readers with high-interest books at a young age. In my classroom reading classroom, we love books. I offer my students a wide array of quality books.
36 students attend my class for a second dose of kindergarten each day with the sole purpose of improving reading and language skills.
These young readers are eager to learn. They also come from a community that is steeped in generational poverty. They face challenges in day to day life that many Americans would never imagine. Most families struggle with basic needs; the majority receive free breakfasts and lunches. While these students are learning to read in English, most do not have an English-speaking parent who is able to help them with homework let alone read them a book.
My Project
The book bins will be used to hold the books in our classroom library. When I began teaching, I purchased plastic shoeboxes to store books. Many of the boxes have cracked and broken. The feeble plastic is often unable to support the weight of the books and the bins tend to fall over. These new bins will offer students easy access to the quality literature in our room. These bins are made of sturdy plastic.
The browsing boxes will be used for students to keep the books they choose to read each week. Ordinarily, my students store these in Ziploc bags which rip easily and need to be replaced every other week. Not only that, but many of the hardcover books don't even fit in the bags. With these browsing boxes, these young readers will be able to enjoy the interesting books they've chosen with ease and organization.
Receiving these book bins and browsing boxes would organize and update my classroom.
I cannot afford to purchase these for my room, yet they are greatly needed. My students would be able to easily find the books they are interested in and store them neatly.
