Mrs. Zeitler from Santa Clara CA is requesting professional development through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
I need training for a cohort of teachers and staff to attend garden training so our students can learn about plant life and healthy eating.
We teach at a new STEAM school filled with creative, curious and motivated learners who come to school ready to learn, work, and play every day. Our students love to try new things, explore, and work together.
Our students love the non-traditional approach to learning that our school embraces.
When they have voice and choice in their education, students want to complete a project or learning target. Our students use project-based learning to take on challenges through collaboration and communication.
A cohort of four staff members (two fifth-grade teachers, our librarian, and our garden co-ordinator) have the opportunity to attend a garden training at Edible SchoolYard in Berkeley, CA, where we will learn about the ethics as well as the basics of food production. We will learn the skills needed in order to teach farm to table lessons, focusing on keeping both our bodies and our planet healthy and understanding where our food comes from.
Our school will only be in its third year this fall--still in its start-up phase--and this training will help us continue to build a sense of community at our school, as every student in the school visits and learns in the garden.
Since two of the ESY attendees are our fifth-grade teacher team, we want to learn how to train our older students to work with our younger ones. Our librarian sees every student in our school each week and is looking for new ways to integrate literacy with the STEAM curriculum in the garden. Our garden co-ordinator is looking for ways to bring it all together and to learn from one of the most amazing garden training programs in the country.
