Springing Into Aquaculture!

My Project

Our science classroom also hosts saltwater aquarium systems for semester-long Aquatic Studies classes. In this hands-on program, students explore the wonders of the ocean while developing practical science skills, caring for marine aquariums, and learning principles of running a small coral aquaculture business.

Students are setting up a new coral fragment grow-out tank and preparing an anemone tank for a captively-bred clownfish pair.

We need a screen top to keep the new fish in their tank, a reliable powerhead for proper water flow, and filtration media to prepare purified freshwater and saltwater for all of our tanks. Students will use the coral viewing glasses to cancel wavelengths of light that obscure coral coloration and learn about the electromagnetic spectrum. They need reef-safe super glue to mount coral cuttings and grow them out to share with other schools and sell or trade with local reef-keepers to increase the likelihood of survival of the corals and reduce the collection of wild-harvested specimens.
