Mrs. Richardson from Richmond VA is requesting professional development through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
I need an online version of Rosetta Stone (Spanish) to learn the language to improve and enhance instruction, communication, and relationships with students, families, and community.

I teach at a model school that incorporates performing arts, visual arts, coding, computer science, financial literacy, and STEM (STEAM) within the curriculum. Our urban school receives federal funding for programs that provide free breakfast and lunch for every student, and Title I services to economically disadvantaged boys and girls.
We are a class which includes military families, gifted/talented students, ESL/ELL students, inclusion/special education students, and the tech-savvy.
My students are energetic and very busy within the classroom. Even with parental support, I would love to say that my students have everything that they need to be successful. But they don't. We are preparing students for college, the workforce, and the world beyond, so they can have a better life.
With more students entering our school system speaking another language, it is becoming more difficult to provide a quality educational experience when you as the teacher can't communicate. Not being bi-lingual has become an obstacle that is keeping me from continuing to do the one thing that I am passionate about (educating all). I am requesting a comprehensive Spanish program from Rosetta Stone. A few years ago, I had the wonderful experience of co-teaching in a Spanish Immersion setting where the students were taught Language Arts/Social Science in English and Mathematics/Science in Spanish. The students switched rooms and were able to be instructed by an English-speaking teacher and a Spanish-Speaking teacher. Benefits provided to ESL/ELL students and the English-Speaking students through the dual language program included stronger thinking skills, increased reading comprehension, and deeper understanding of math concepts.
Building a bridge to connect school and family is vital to the development of every child.
Language is that bridge and being able to communicate in a person's native language shows that you are committed to a lifelong relationship. Becoming a bilingual educator will have benefits for our families, the classroom, and this community. As an educator, I will be able to provide a powerful opportunity to strengthen my students' cognitive potential and literacy development in two languages. I will also be able to cultivate a greater cultural awareness with my students and their families.
