Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are part of a performing arts magnet; however, we are a majority Title I school with very limited funding. Our school is relatively homogeneous, with a very small percentage of exceptions. Most of my students seem to be compassionate, kind, and understanding of the importance of standing up for others.
However, discussing in class and reality are two different things.
I know that I instill a hypothetical understanding of the importance of tolerance, but I'm not sure that students understand how to be tolerant on a one-to-one basis. Being middle school students, humor often shields sensitivity, but this also prohibits the ability for empathy to flourish. Most students want to be treated with respect, but don't necessarily know how to give that respect first.
My Project
Independent reading has always been one of my favorite activities to both improve my students' reading fluency and to also build classroom community. The past few years have seen my library deteriorate, as well as become outdated. By providing my students with high-interest, high-quality books, I will be able to relaunch my independent reading program.
By participating in book clubs using challenging, relevant texts, my seventh graders will grow as readers, communicators, and individuals.
I have researched and chosen novels that are current, and proven to connect with today's students, so that they will be self-motivated to discuss, learn, and grow from one another, as well as the text.
