This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Brighten up residence for local senior citizens center
Librarian & Service Learning Coach
Large urban high school in Illinois with a high poverty level among the heavily Hispanic and Black student body
We have a district-wide obligation of 40-service learning hours for HS graduation.
Many students have jobs, very demanding family responsibilities or transportation issues that encumber their ability to travel any creditable distance for volunteer opportunities. The school's location is prohibitive to most opportunities and we have no easy access or free transportation.
We have partnered with a local senior citizen center for various projects (many of the residents attended this high school). We would like to purchase, paint and decorate and plant seeds in 100 mini flower pots for a spring gift to the senior citizens.
I will purchase the outlined items (pots, paint, plant seeds). Three classes of art students will decorate each pot. The science students will plants the seeds. We will deliver the pots to the neighboring senior citizen home in time for some spring cheer.
This project will benefit my students by assisting them in fulfilling a graduation requirement while using some acquired classroom skills through art and science, but it will also enhance the communications between the generations. The students will profit from being involved with a “random act of kindness”, the seniors will benefit from a lovely gift and both groups will have an enhanced connection.
