Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a high needs district with over 80% of students receiving free or reduced price lunch. Additionally, over 25% of my students are English Language Learners. The resources that my students need within my science classroom cannot be fulfilled by the current budget.
My students want to explore the world around them and I want to provide them with the tools to do so.
Students have a drive to learn about 21st century STEM fields, but do not have the technology or supplies to do so. I want the opportunity to engage students in science in a way that they have not previously had. STEM is fun and exciting and my students are ready to experience this in the classroom!
My Project
As students are learning about their body systems, they will have the opportunity to watch another organism develop these systems. Students will watch the chicks develop, hatch, and grow within the classroom.
Students will watch body systems develop in the chicks as they learn about how their own systems function.
Using the incubator, students will have a live feed as the chicks develop and hatch. After hatching, the chicks will stay in the cage so students can watch them grow in the classroom. Students will learn how to take care of the chicks by changing the bedding, food, and water. These supplies will allow students to observe body systems developing and make the curriculum come to life!
