My Students
Every day my students start class by pulling out an individually chosen book to read. We spend a significant amount of time in class reading and writing about what we read. Books are essential for this process to happen.
I teach 8th graders in a Title 1 school in West Michigan. My students are extremely diverse not just in ethnicity and background, but also in their learning styles and their reading preferences. The students in my school definitely suffer a vocabulary deficit and word poverty. The best way to combat both issues is by reading voraciously.
My Project
My students will use these books to read! The books I have requested are all from a student-generated "Wish List". Many are from series that I have one or two books of already, but many are new books they have heard about because they enjoyed a book like it, or love the author. So students will be reading these books and writing about them and talking about them.
I've mentioned before that many of my students walk in the door already suffering word poverty and a severe vocabulary deficit. Reading books they love will not just ignite a love of reading, but will boost their vocabulary, their confidence, and their overall success in school and life!
