This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are part of pilot classes we are trying at my school by having an all-girls class and an all-boys class for 8th grade. My students love reading and engaging in texts related to real-world events. My students are special because demographically, they are economically disadvantaged but they dare to dream. I love that they question the status quo and don't take everything at face value. Even though they may be limited financially, they still desire to learn about this world and especially our country as it relates to the rest of the world. My students are real-life innovators.
My Project
I think this is an important book that can be used as a springboard for talking about race relations, law enforcement, and the Black Lives Matter movement. It’s necessary to talk about race because most of the time race takes the backseat because we are so uncomfortable in reading and exposing our students to controversial content. I believe that we must start these conversations in the safe havens of our classrooms so that all of our students can be educated and band together to hopefully educate others in a positive manner. By reading this novel, my students will be able to not only have dialogue but hopefully create solution based dialogue that will open up those critical thinking skills.
