My students need lots and lots of yarn to knit hats for babies, children, and adults in need. To make the hats, they'll also need some more looms, large plastic needles, and pom poms.
The fifth grade students at my school are fun, highly motivated, inquisitive learners who LOVE working together to make a positive impact in their school and community. As a teacher, I strive to help empower my students and teach them how they can be productive, kind, and caring individuals that make the world a better place one day at a time.
Our community service group's mission is to foster an understanding of our community by knitting hats to donate to local hospitals, schools, and homeless shelters.
Even though the majority of students in our school live below the poverty line, with over half receiving free or reduced rate lunch, they never hesitate in helping others when needed and have embraced our school's new community service learning time.
My Project
With the supplies I've requested, students will learn how to knit during our Community Service Learning block. Using the yarn and the looms, students will knit hats to donate to local, high poverty school children, people living in our local homeless shelters, and newborn babies in our local hospitals. They'll use the needles and pom poms to finish off their hats. On top of learning a new skill, they'll also impact our community in a positive way.
Through these activities, I hope to inspire students in an authentic, meaningful way to care for others and make our world a bit more kind.
