My Students

My school is a Title I school that serves approximately 400 students in grades 6-8. One hundred percent of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch and some have no permanent home. Despite this, my students work extremely hard to overcome the many obstacles that they face on a daily basis.

One of the best parts about my school is that we have such a diverse background of students.

Many might not come from a prosperous background, but they soak up every opportunity they have to learn, and this project will help the library gain materials that will help ensure all of my students have materials to be successful.

My Project

Middle school can be such a tough time in a child's life. Every year, I print out messages of kindness on post-it notes that I put on my library windows and the students take those notes with them to remind them how awesome they are, or that they can do this. Many of them even took the notes and gave them to their friends to give them a boost. I was amazed when students started coming to me telling me that they even saw the kindness notes on social media because the students were posting pictures of themselves with the note that spoke to them. I want to take that concept and take it to the next level.

This project would supply the library STEM/STEAM makerspace with the supplies, a Silhouette Cameo and basic Cameo supplies such as vinyl, to create kindness sayings that we can put up in places such as the library, bathroom stalls, classrooms, hallways, lunchroom, and gym locker rooms.

Many of my students come from a tough background and don't even have the basic necessities, but they deserve to come to a school where they feel welcome and wanted.

As a librarian, I often struggle with helping our growing English Language Learner population because of the language barrier, so I can only imagine how difficult the situation is for them. Besides spreading kindness, I want to be able to combat this uneasiness they must feel when they first come to the library. This project will allow me to have the proper supplies to work with my higher level ELL students to create signage for those that are new to our school and can't yet speak English. This will help the library to be inviting and easy to navigate for everyone.
