Help me give my students the ability to explore their very own, personal copy of the Newbery Medal award book, "Last Stop on Market Street" by Matt de la Peña.

My students are inquisitive, excited and successful in the ways in which they think and learn with and around each other. Though this is a special group of students, the challenges of remote learning and this idea of a "virtual classroom" has come with it's fair share of set-backs.
With everything being somewhat "virtual" this year, one of the many important things my students are really missing is the excitement and exploration that comes with a real, physical book.
The smell, the sound of it cracking the first time it's opened, the ability to touch words with their fingers and look closely at the details of colors and characters. My students are safe and healthy which is the most important part, but also my students lack the resources at home to fully explore the curiosities of 1st grade. I want to give my students the opportunity to not only have their own book to explore, but a book that shows them how powerful they are.
There is no better feeling than opening a new book for the first time. Flipping through the crisp pages and running your fingers over the words, all while looking closely at characters and colorful details in a new book. But remote learning has made it difficult for my students to experience those magical moments in reading. That's why I want to give my 1st Grade class their very own copy of the Newbery Medal award winning book, "Last Stop On Market Street". Each student will receive their own copy to read at home. This culturally inclusive book encourages young readers to find the beauty all around them, even in the unlikely places. I am hopeful that my students will be able to feel a bit of the holiday excitement and cheer with this book.
