All my students are on an educational journey with endless opportunities to discover new things, embrace change, learn from their mistakes, help others, and work hard to reach their goals. Effort and attitude are their key elements to success. They choose to tackle challenges that will make a difference in their lives. I teach them that failing is not something that should be feared. Failing is not only a part of learning but is an opportunity to grow. My students are hardworking. They have chosen to take my accelerated science course to challenge themselves. If there is a problem, they work on a solution. They are developing problem-solving strategies that they will be able to apply to every aspect of their lives.
My Project
My students jokingly call my classroom "The Dungeon" because it is located in the basement of our school building. So my students are learning in a windowless classroom. We have to get our light from the 24 fluorescent ceiling lights in my room.
The fluorescent lights are very harsh.
It is so bad that I have physically removed some of the bulbs to reduce the glare and left notes to our custodians to not fix them. When I walk in and flip that switch it is like a giant, uncomfortable, and strangely hued spotlight has been turned on. During my prep period, I shut the lights off and use a small desk lamp to work so that I can give my eyes and brain a break from the horrible lighting. I don't have this option when the students are in my room.
I would love to be able to get my students' fluorescent light covers. These covers are fire resistant so I can use them in my classroom safely. These light covers soften the bright, harsh light and eliminate some of the unwanted glare. Studies have shown that fluorescent lights filters reduce stress, increase overall mood, improve concentration, reduces fatigue, reduce headaches, and improve mental sharpness throughout the day.
