The excitement of sharing the products you create is a definite motivational tool for all learners. Six year old authors will see books projected and read the books they have created on the big screen. What a perfect way to motivate writers and provide instant feedback while increasing engagement.
Our K-5 school is a happy inviting place for over 500 children.
Enter my classroom of first grade learners and you'll find 24 children unlocking the world of reading in an environment in which they are surrounded by reading materials. You will see children immersed in literacy activities. The excitement of being able to read a new book emerges daily. They love to hear new stories and to use these mentor texts to experiment with their own writing. Daily they are engaged in the book making process in our pretend Book Factory. They have become talented authors, choosing their own topics, making connections from the books they read to the books they write. The author's chair is a motivational seat for sharing their final products. In our school, children learn to value reading. That makes me smile.
My Project
A document camera will assist us in extending our literacy skills. During our writing workshop, students will be able to see books projected on a large screen as the teacher reads. A larger visual of the text will help students explore the craft of authors and transfer these techniques to their own writing. I will be able project an image as I model the writing process while composing my own stories through a think aloud process. The camera will also provide opportunities for the children to project the stories they write. Their classmates will be able to offer them feedback while seeing their stories displayed.
The document camera will be used throughout the day in all content areas as a tool for sharing student work samples and allowing us time to reflect, praise and encourage. Feedback is the number one way to increase achievement. An enlarged representation of student work will assist us in this process.
Funding of this project will make a tremendous impact on my ability to deliver quality instruction to my students.
The ability to project all content areas will directly impact the visual learner. In addition, providing children opportunities to display their work while talking about their products will expand their speaking skills and build their confidence. The ability to speak and communicate in front of a group is critical to becoming successful learners and productive citizens.
