My students come from so many cultures, we have more than 30 different languages spoken at home in our student population. We have students with great wealth and students with great poverty. In our gym classes, all students participate together, even if they don't speak the same languages. Our kids need to be active and they need to move during the day, physical education classes give our students those options. Our school is an International Baccalaureate school, we offer a large number of opportunities for all of our students to be the best person they can be.
My students need to be able to quickly learn cooperative skills without using spoken languages so that they can easily play games together in class.
Our students are learning both culture and activity in our classes. They are creating relationships, developing their connections with their peers and they are learning about a variety of activities. The more we can do to make this process easy and safe for our students, the better it will be. We can help these students with visual clues, so that even our students who do not speak English can participate fully.
My Project
Many of our students are Muslim and they wear a hijab as part of their daily clothing. Those same hijabs are not sufficient when they want to participate in a school sports team because the fabrics are not breathable and they tend to slip, causing lots of lost time due to adjustments.
Our middle school girls want to participate in the sports programs, but many can not because they struggle to wear the team uniform and their hijabs at the same time.
With professional athletes being seen in athletic hijabs, we think it is time for our students and athletes to have the same equipment.
Sports don't know or follow a certain religion, we would like for our school sports to be representative of that as well. All students are welcome on our teams and all students should have the equipment they need to make it happen. While these hijabs won't guarantee successful victories, our victories will happen with the increased participation of our kids!
