Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are of mostly Hispanic decent and very low income families. Their neighborhood is in a very high crime rate area, which limits their ability to play in neighborhood parks and outdoors. They are also very limited to opportunities to experience various sports and games within their community because of no parent available to take them to these events and lack of income to cover the costs.
In most cases, single parent homes create a huge social gap with our kids, which can lead to poor physical performance as well as academically.
Our students love to learn new physical activities and having the necessary equipment is crucial.
Students learn that participating in recreational activities, and/or given opportunities to experience various sports and recreational games also improves their social skills, self-confidence, better performance with their academics and opens doors of opportunity. Sports are not for everyone so I like to help each student find some type of physical activity that they enjoy.
My Project
With class sizes averaging 35 students per class, it's crucial that every student or at least every 2 students have a piece of equipment (ball, racket, paddle, etc.) to practice the daily skill being taught. This also helps my students gain self-confidence, which helps them to stay on task, which leads to success and a joy for physical activity. It's no secret of the many benefits that physical activity offers.
We need volleyballs and basketballs for team and class practice.
We need more exercise/fitness balls so my entire class can be engaged and have the opportunity to practice physical activity. The fitness balls allows my students to learn another form of conditioning along with increased balance and flexibility, which can be difficult at this age.
First and foremost is to give ALL my students valuable and quality practice time every school day. Finding success leads to joy of subject or in this case, physical activity/sports/games. When students are given opportunity to practice with the necessary equipment they are more likely to stay focused and display positive behavior. This also enhances the over-all class environment, which increases long-term learning.
