Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep lessons simple yet fun and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students are creative, clever and very spontaneous.
They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. Many of them receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire our scholars to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
Having the sports equipment necessary to play group games, cones, basketballs, badminton, jump ropes, and softballs, is essential for students to participate and learn from one another. Physical activity is important to all students' learning and development. Physical education helps build communication skills, emotional skills, and teamwork within the classroom.
Students will be using this equipment to learn and practice fundamental motor skills such as throwing, catching, kicking, dribbling, and striking.
They will also learn concepts such as under, over, through, and having the opportunity to be able to create their own games. This equipment will provide the students the opportunity to gain cognitive knowledge, practice various strategies, participate in team building and cooperative activities, and have exposure to cultural games and activities they may otherwise not experience.
When students learn how to communicate with one another through play, they are more successful in the classroom and in life. Students learn how to problem solve and communicate. This leads to a stronger classroom community as well as being physically fit.
