Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am a first year teacher in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The school I teach in is located in a very poor neighborhood, and the vast majority of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch (a measure of poverty). Our school does not have an active PTA, so funding is limited. Part of my job as a first grade teacher is to incorporate 30 minutes of physical activity into the school day. Right now, most of this time is spent with the children chasing each other around the playground. Most of my students have had little exposure to organized sports, and many of them do not have sports equipment at home. I know that my students would be thrilled to have some sports equipment to play with at recess, such as soccer balls, footballs, baseballs and bats, jump ropes and bouncy balls. This will provide them with valuable exposure to sports and games that they otherwise would be without.
