My students need flag football and soccer equipment (soccer balls, footballs, cones, and flags for flag football) so that they can learn new sports and leisure activities that they can continue to enjoy as adults.
I teach 18 22-year-old young adults with a variety of intellectual, physical, and sensory impairments in our high school's Transition Program. My students are focusing their time in school on preparing for life after high school; that looks different for every student. We work with each student individually to help them communicate their personal goals and visions for their futures.
My students are looking forward to being as independent as possible after high school.
All of my students participate in internships and jobs around our school building and in the community as part of their education. We also practice interviewing skills, job applications, cooking, cleaning, money, time, and functional writing skills. They also need to learn leisure skills and find ways to stay healthy as adults.
Most of my students are looking forward to moving out of their parents' home, working, and being involved in their community when they finish school. Others are looking to continue their education in a college or vocational/trade training program.
My Project
My students are working on transitioning from high school to adult life. Many of them often tell me they would like to play a sport, make new friends, and get out in their community more. Many of them have not had opportunities to learn sports so ch as soccer and flag football and would be able to learn from us and then use these skills to move on and perhaps participate in adult leagues when they finish high school. My students are older than the typical high school students and need appropriate ways to exercise and participate in sports activities with each other instead of taking PE class with 14-year-olds.
