Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In my classroom and at KIPP Academy of Opportunity in general we are striving to make sports and physical activity an active part of students' learning. Unfortunately we lack the supplies to have effect sports programs. We lack balls to play sports with, cones to outline fields and jerseys to organize opposing teams. As a result our students often must wait to use a ball, use their own sweatshirts and backpack to outline courts or fields and become confused as to who is on which team.
We organize sports and exercise programs in our afternoon sessions (from 3:10 to 5:00pm) in order to teach students the value of teamwork, friendly competition and physical health. To do all this effectively we need the basic supplies of balls, cones and jerseys. These supplies once we have them will serve our entire student population for years to come.
Sports also serve to help us bring home the message of going to college for our students. Sports are a great and easily accessible way to get students excited and invested attending college. Our school homerooms are already organized into colleges and students are eager to get their college teams on the field.
