Have you ever thought about the children who are native English speakers but can speak one of the most difficult languages in the world- Mandarin fluently in 3rd grade? My students do because they are in a Mandarin dual language immersion program. Each day they will stay a half day in Mandarin class and the other half in English class. They have to work very hard to keep up with the fast pacing since they need time to learn Mandarin.
In such fast pacing learning environment, my students need time to do outdoor activities to help them keep up the concentration.
Sometimes I also have them learn the language with TPR (Total Physical Response) in PE class. My students like to learn Mandarin with PE.
My Project
Studies have shown that exercise helps blood flow to the brain and enhance the connections between nerves, leading to better concentration, memory, creativity, and even problem-solving skills. Being in the bilingual program, half of the day for my students is Mandarin class. Therefore, they need to be able to understand all the learning contents in a shorter time frame for having time to learn Mandarin. Being concentrated is very important for them to keep up the learning pacing.
We want to create PE centers for the whole 3rd graders for them to have time to play, learn and have fun.
All the third-grade teachers will responsible for one center and have students to rotate different centers. By the end of the year, they will learn all the PE standards. They can get to choose what center want to go to. Students get to play with other students who like the same sports.
Please help us with the equipment our students need. Now we have some equipment, but not enough for all groups. Please help us build the PE centers and help our students have fun outdoor activities besides learning in the classroom.
