My Students

As a teacher librarian in a small but beautiful library, I see all 240 students in two days, circulating up to 600 books in a week. My students are readers!

My students are diverse learners, from a wide range of socio-economic, racial, and ethnic backgrounds.

The school is located in the heart of an urban environment, with students attending from all parts of the city. The school focuses on civil rights, which is reflected in the values of the students, teachers, and curriculum.

My Project

Our collection of sports books is so outdated! Many students ask for books about sports and athletes because it is something they are interested in and can relate to. Unfortunately, sports books can become outdated quickly because team members change and new stars are constantly emerging. Our current books on athletes are about the likes of Michael Jordan and Barry Bonds. Legends for sure, but the students are eager to read about the athletes they see live and on tv, like Steph Curry and Buster Posey.

A new collection of sports books will engage a whole population of reluctant readers, sparking an interest in reading.

These books will increase literacy development, while also encouraging reading for pleasure. In our school library, students are encouraged to choose books about topics they are interested in. When a student finds something he/she really wants to know about, they are more likely to read on their own. Independent reading is a literacy goal!
