Through sports, kids see results that come from repeating certain skills in order to perfect them. They develop a more positive self image through personal achievement and learn that if they spend enough time on a task, they will become better at it, carrying over that lesson to other life skills.
The demographics of our students varies widely.
We are a small, innovative, project-based school with a free/reduced meal ratio of 60+% of the student body. We primarily teach students through hands-on projects and frequent field trips to points of student interest. Students learn in a group setting as well as individually based on their personal interests and career goals. Due to the size of our school, we don't offer formal PE classes and would like to add to the options our students have for physical exercise through sports electives.
My Project
Our students choose elective classes four out of five days of the class week. We would like to be able to include physical exercise as part of the elective choices but lack any equipment to further that goal.
Our school borders a city park with access to the space needed for a variety of sports activities. Since our students stay together as a group for 7th and 8th graders, sports will allow the new 7th graders to the school the chance to form a group and bond with each other and for the 8th graders to perfect their skills, readying them for the high school experiences.
With the Flag Football set, our students will enhance their hand/eye coordination and team skills. With the Disc golf uses, they can practice their math skills in a fun, competitive way. Lastly with the badminton net, they will build team participation skills. They will have fun!
Sports provides an opportunity for kids to learn to take turns, set goals as a team, and cooperate with other children to achieve those goals.
It's this kind of emotional and social development that can easily carry over to how well children work with their teachers, classmates, relatives, and anyone else they may encounter in life.
