My students live close to the beach and my class is very interested in ocean habitats. Many of my students fish with their families, boat, and enjoy the barrier islands. I would like to continue to help them grow in their love and respect of our environment. I grew up on the one of the islands in our community. I want to teach my students to have compassion to take care of the beaches and marshes ( the ocean’s nursery). I want to plant this love in them to grow, to share with family members, and possibly change others’ hearts in the way they treat our natural resources.
I would love to give my students a hands-on experience with sea creatures in their natural habitat. They would get to experience a touch tank to learn about what these creatures need to survive. We will observe the environment and talk about our coastal environment. The children will brainstorm ways to help our environment, in order to protect our natural resources. This lesson will give the children an opportunity to learn about their coastal environment and take ownership in preserving our coastal areas. This is important to our future children and sea creatures in the low country coastal area. I believe this lesson will benefit not only our community, but coastal wildlife as well.
