My students come from high-poverty neighborhoods; many are English Language Learners, but none of these labels change their joy for learning. They are vivacious 6th graders who are excited to master new skills. They support each other in their learning through technology and modeling. I am lucky to have such empathetic young citizens. Our school has only been open four years and have built so much already but need so much more to give these amazing children the education they deserve.
My project is being created in order to fulfill costs of the entrance fee to Lake Compounce. It's a reward for the students' social and academic growth. Throughout the year, we have been working on interpersonal skills, building habits and mindsets to help succeed in life. This experience will complement classroom instruction.
This may be the first trip which many of these students take without their parents, helping to build maturity and character through their newfound independence.
I want to offer these disadvantaged students a unique opportunity to create stronger bonds and practice team building activities. I want to offer a greater view of the world to these children who have likely not seen the world they live in outside of the classroom and Providence, Rhode Island.
