Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I joined the Patriots in 7th grade because I wanted to be part of a family. The hardest part of running is when you want to give up, but you don't. The Patriots gave me role models to look up to." This is a quote from one of our runners from a yearbook.
Many teams develop a culture all based on winning or losing, but we develop a culture based on hard work and taking on challenges to strengthen one mentally.
In our team's history, we have ran distances ranging from 1500 m to even a half marathon! Many teams have tryouts, but we accept all students because no matter what size or level one is, they should still have access to the benefits and joy of running. We train in all sorts of weather, including the rain and snow, to develop a strong mindset! We've completed tough challenges such as running five bridges in one day! Our runners treat one another like family members inside and outside of school. We have runners who graduated to high school, but still return to help the team out!
My Project
We have an amazing group of female runners and we would love to have headbands to wear at races to build team spirit! During the pandemic, we didn't know how our running team would be, because we expected lower numbers due to parents/guardians opting for their children to stay safe at home. Fortunately, we had a solid, small group of eager and motivated 6th grade female runners who have become the anchor of our team. Their work ethic, kindness, spirit, energy, and enthusiasm carried our team through the pandemic.
This year, they are 7th graders and continue to be the anchor of our team.
Our attendance is now as high as its ever been pre-pandemic and our core group from last year have served as excellent role models for our new runners. New runners always look up to the older ones. As more and more races open up to youth for running again, team headbands would be a great way to boost team spirit and increase team comradery during races. A little positive energy can go a long way in the race! Every one of our female runners will be connected by wearing something in common that's more than a team shirt.
