Help me give my students comfortable flexible seats when they return to school in the fall!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our K-12 school specializes in the education of children with learning disorders such as autism and ADHD, with over 80% of our students on an IEP (Individualized Education Program). Most of our students also come from low-income households and receive both breakfast and lunch at school each day.
While much of our focus during the day is on the core academic areas, we also strive to develop social, emotional, coping and life skills in our students.
Our low student-to-teacher ratio allows students to build lasting, positive relationships with adults throughout the school and allows teachers to get to know what works best for our students as individuals. We also work hard to make our school a comfortable place to be for our students by meeting various individual needs.
My students enjoy having the flexibility in our classroom to sit in seats that are comfortable in order to do their best work. Many students find sitting in hard plastic chairs all day to be rather annoying. Some students fidget in their chairs. We currently have 7 beanbag chairs in our classroom and they are some of the most popular seats in the room! Students are able to sit in this area when working on independent work, participating in class meetings, taking computer assessments, and when we are doing whole group instruction using our projector. I've even been known to sit on the floor with them!
With the bean bag chairs being such a comfortable and loved option, my students have used them so frequently that in the last year, the beans have gone flat and are not as supportive as they once were.
We would love to get some new refills so that our students have a comfortable and familiar place to sit when they return in the fall.
