I have wonderful 3rd graders. My kids range from below to above grade level. In order to make sure each child is getting what they need, we do a lot of individualized centers. My biggest challenge, when it comes to teaching these students, is having enough materials. My kids are hungry to learn!
I teach a 3rd-grade class, in which many students are from low-income rural families.
My students come from a small farm town. My students are very curious about the world. Due to their income and home responsibilities, many of them have never left the area. They are all very eager to learn and read! Our school is very bright and encouraging. For many students, this is the highlight of their day. All of my students are also being given an opportunity to develop their own skills and talents in a way and at the pace that is best for them, through differentiated instruction.
My Project
I am writing this project so that my students have access to nonfiction texts at their individual level, as well as a place to store their selected texts. Every day my students have the opportunity to silent read a book of their choosing. My goal is to incorporate more nonfiction texts into their learning.
I believe it is important for students to take ownership and have choice during silent reading.
The nonfiction text set will allow students to have a wider variety of books to select from, and aligns with our social studies grade level standards. Our new book bins will provide a safe place for the new books to be stored.
