I have 4th grade students. My kids range from below to above grade level. In order to make sure each child is getting what they need we do a lot of individualized centers. My biggest challenge when it comes to teaching these students is having enough materials. My kids are hungry to learn!
I teach a 4th grade class, in which 90% of my students are African, Asian, Hispanic or Afro-American.
Many of which are first generating Americans and English Language Learners. All of my students are low income, at-risk students. My students are very curious about the world. Due to their income many of them have never left the Greater Lansing area. They are all very eager to learn and read! Our school is very bright and encouraging. For many students this is the highlight of their day.
All of my students are considered high risk, and are living well below the poverty level. But, all of my students are also being given an opportunity to develop their own skills and talents in a way and at the pace that is best for them, through differentiated instruction.
My Project
Each day, we will participate in small reading groups. I do not have more than 5 students in each group to ensure they are each given the attention and support they need. These books will be used as guided reading books. We will be working on vocabulary, spelling, comprehension, visualizing, decoding, and many more reading skills. My main goal is to aid in my students progress to move forward in their reading comprehension.
My students need to make a lot of progress during the course of the school year, and one way is through very directed homework. It's one thing to plan homework for each student, but another to get it done. Having books that interest them and materials to allow them to take a book home for homework will facilitate students in staying on track. Your donations will help contribute to the progress of each and every child. Thank you for considering this project
By having guided reading groups my students will be able to have a life in which they can read and comprehend what they are reading.
Many of my students who never thought about going to college can now think of it as an option. These materials will help these students and many to come!
