Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 7th and 8th grade students are an energetic bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun. Our Title I middle school is located in a high-poverty, working-class neighborhood. About 60% of our student body receives free or reduced-price lunch, and many of them speak English as a second language. You wouldn't know from their cheerful demeanors, but many of them have already experienced trauma, disruption, and loss in their lives.
This year, we are attempting a reboot of Home Economics after a 21-year absence—my students love it and are getting tons of practice not only with valuable living skills but also with soft skills such as teamwork and communication!
My Project
My Home Economics classroom is a place of discovery where teamwork and collaboration rule the day. Many of my 7th and 8th grade students have never followed recipes before or ever made a cookie from scratch.
I want to teach my students that they can create delicious and nutritious foods using seasonings that pack a powerful punch, so all the seasonings I'm requesting add a lot of flavor without adding unhealthy fats.
Our kitchen is in constant need of cleaning so we can keep food-borne pathogens at bay. The hand and air sanitizer will help us keep bad odors away and our hands clean.
The pressure cooker will help us make foods more quickly, and it can be used to make yogurt, eggs, and other healthy recipes. If you've ever tried to cook a recipe in an hour with 24 hungry teenagers, you'd know how important it is to speed up the cooking process!
