I have 20 students in my first grade classroom that need hands-on materials to learn science, technology, engineering, art, and math. They are kind, creative, and eager students. They get so excited and motivated when we do S.T.E.A.M. activities. I am also the leader of a Girls Who Code Club that has over 60 girls 3rd-6th who are eager to learn about coding and technology. After school I work with approximately 200 students K-6 in a program that teaches coding and computer programming. I work with almost 280 students who are excited about S.T.E.A.M. and I want to create fun, authentic, and unique opportunities.
My students need a variety of motivating, hands-on technology that will spark the interest of all of my students, especially my female students that are hesitant to learn how to code and learn about computer programming.
Having a variety of STEAM materials that can be integrated into all aspects of the core curriculum will show my students that computer programming is useful, easy, and a fun way to learn. I also want to motivate the girls in my class and coding clubs to become excited about coding and computer science.
My Project
My students will be able to learn the core curriculum in a fun, motivating way when Sphero mini robots are used to teach math, computer science, art, and language arts. My students will use the Sphero robots to learn measurement and geometry to create pathways and mazes for the robots. They will learn how to program the robots using coding. They will also be able to create art and write about their art projects that they created using the Sphere mini robots.
The classroom should be an innovative and engaging place to learn the core curriculum and my students should have access to new technology and materials that will enhance their learning.
My students love learning to code and using new technology. When I can integrate technology into my lessons, learning becomes more authentic to them. The classroom comes alive with excitement and the sense of adventure. My students get excited to come to school and see what new adventures they will have with robotics. Sphero minis are the perfect basic robot to teach my young learners how to code and program a robot.
