The adult students in this class are models of perseverance, determination, and hope. Most of them have made the choice to return to school years after leaving the system. They now believe they can achieve new heights in their lives and careers by learning to spell, write, and read. When they first enrolled at DORS-IVY, they were unable to identify all the letters and sounds used in spelling, but now they can sound out one- and two-syllable words and are spelling and writing at Kindergarten and First Grade levels. They feel great pride in the progress they have made, but they want to continue their journey in learning so that they can earn their high school diplomas.
My Project
With the Fire tablet and the All About Spelling curriculum, our students will be able to learn all the phonographs in our language. They will also know the spelling rules (and the rule-breakers) that will enable them to write and read more effortlessly.
Our students will have spelling lessons at their own level, in multi-sensory ways, that will fill in the many gaps in education and address language-processing disorders in a systematic, fun way.
For the first time in their lives, these students will be able to complete applications for employment accurately. They will be able to read and understand on-the-job instructions and procedures. They will be able to reply to email messages without relying on others to write for them or to check their spelling.
