Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a Title I school district, I recognize that my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am trying to provide my students with numerous opportunities to be active and to teach them healthy eating habits.
An active lifestyle combined with healthy eating will allow my students to become better learners.
All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch to ensure they have at least two healthy meals each school day. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly influence their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire my students to be active every day as well as establish healthy eating habits early on so they can continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
At our school, we do cup stacking or the official name Speed Stacking. Our kindergarteners all the way up to our eighth graders partake in the sport of cup stacking. Cup stacking is a great activity to teach students hand-eye coordination and reinforce the structure of reading (working left to right). Currently, we only have the cups but no timing mats.
Please help me get some timing mats for our students to use at the end of our cup stacking unit to determine who is the fastest stacker at our school!
These mats will really come into play when our school participates in “World Stack Up Day.” During lunchtime, we use stopwatches to time the students while stacking. Having these mats will make it more official and not have to rely on someone else stopping and starting the watch for you. Hopefully, our students will enjoy the added competitiveness. Cup stacking is a great sport for our students who may shy away from more physical sports like football or basketball. Cup stacking is great for developing coordination, motor skills, and disguising physical activity in a fun activity.
