I teach Family and Consumer Science at Danville Middle School. One of our district wide aims is to promote high student achievement. Each one of the classes here at the Middle School has been focusing on ways to increase vocabulary and reading comprehension. An activity that I would like to add to my classes during extra time at the end of a period is speed scrabble. Using the letters, small teams create words and add letters each time someone has used all the ones they started with. This also incorporates math as they would be adding their scores when all chips have been used. Reading and math are two subject areas where we use cross-curriculum activities. I see approximately 150 students each trimester, 450 each year, and also 20 additional students in my homeroom. I would like to have 8 games to use in small groups of 3-4 students. I believe this will help the students with vocabulary, spelling, math and interaction with other students as they spend time each opportunity we have to use them. Thank you for your consideration. I am looking forward to being able to add this to my classroom activities.
