Welcome to our English Language Arts classroom in Gwinn, Michigan. Our high school is tucked in the pines of the beautiful and remote Upper Peninsula. My students are quirky, fun, and high energy. I teach tenth through twelfth graders whose interests range from playing sports to participating in drama camp to showing farm animals at the county fair.
My students inspire me every day with their strength of spirit.

My Project
One of my goals is to make sure my high school students never lose interest in reading. On Valentine's Day every year, we do a Blind Date With A Book project, where I wrap books and put a brief description on the outside. Students pick a book based on the description rather than the cover. This year, we are blessed to already have a project funded for our Blind Date With A Book thanks to a generous donor.
Now, I would like to add a twist.
The idea is to include coffee and Valentine treats to make the day even more special, and a speed dating with a book activity. The tables in our room will be lined up in two long rows, speed-dating style. I happen to have pink tablecloths, LED candles, and other decor from my daughter's recent baby shower to create ambiance. Students will be given a questionnaire. The top part of the form will ask about their book interests, and the bottom half will contain conversation topics about the choice book they are currently reading. Once these forms are filled out, students will rotate around the room, talking face to face while going through the conversation topics. When they are done rotating, students will be asked to pick their top three reading choices.
To end the hour, students will pick a playing card from the deck. If they draw a heart or a diamond, they will get a Hershey's Kiss. If they draw a club or a spade, they will get an extra-sour Warhead. We'll leave class knowing that our Valentine's weekend will be 'booked.' What new book has clicked with you lately?
