I am a Speech Language Pathologist working in an inner city low income school. I worked with over 60 kids in the building with various backgrounds and communication needs. I provide speech and language services to students in the general education setting as well as the special education classrooms. I work with children who are non-verbal, children with Autism, children with articulation difficulties, and children with receptive and expressive language weaknesses.
Learning to communicate and learn language is essential for their success in school and in life.
My Project
The iPad and a case is an excellent way to target a variety of speech and language skills – from articulation to language, from nonverbal communication to social skills. Apps on the iPad can be used to teach and reinforce various language skills. Some apps can even target articulation goals. Students will have the opportunity to practice their good speech skills in a structured and fun environment. With the various apps available the iPad can easily be tailored to fit various needs. The iPad can also serve as a motivating break for a job well done. With so many therapeutic apps available, I will be able to bring speech therapy to students in the classroom, hallway, or playground without lugging a pile full of materials around with me. The iPad is becoming an excellent way to facilitate communication by incorporating it with the various speech and language therapy activities already being used in speech.
