Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students all have communication disorders including (but not limited to): articulation/phonological disorders, receptive/expressive language disorders, fluency (stuttering) disorders, social pragmatic disorders, voice disorders, and hearing loss. My students will all require specialized instruction in the areas of speech and language, many of whom are also English Language Learners who came from other countries. Many of my students primarily speak Spanish, Portuguese, and Arabic. The majority of these students come from low-income households and school is a place where they come for structure, guidance, and support.
My students are the most genuine, empathetic, appreciative kids you could ever meet.
They receive speech and language services and are learning within inclusion classrooms, STEP (behavior) programs, as well as substantially separate classrooms for those with cognitive and intellectual disorders. All of my students have individualized and unique needs. Despite the challenges their disorders bring, these children are eager and willing to learn.
My Project
As a speech-language pathologist at an inner-city school, I am responsible for screening, evaluating, and treating a large, diverse caseload of children between the ages of 3 and 12. Unfortunately, several of the assessment measures available are outdated and are no longer considered valid.
In order to successfully diagnose and qualify a student for speech and language therapy, it is essential to have standardized assessment measures that are thorough, valid, and ultimately help to identify the presence and severity of speech and/or language disorders.
I am in need of a comprehensive language assessment in order to identify and provide evidence as to where a child's language deficits are (e.g., phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax, figurative language, and pragmatic language). With a thorough, valid assessment measure, results yielded will be more accurate and will help to provide specific, targeted therapy plans that are individualized to each student who is diagnosed with a speech/language disorder.
In addition, several students on my caseload have both receptive and expressive language disorders, meaning that comprehending, processing, and eliciting language is a challenge for them. The Expanding Expression Tool (EET) is an evidence-based therapy tool that targets oral and written expression, vocabulary comprehension, defining and describing, making associations, categorizing, and comparing and contrasting. All of these skills are essential for academic success. Thank you so much for reading and for your consideration of our crucial project.
